Troy Martin joined the Department of Focused Inquiry in 2016.  Prior to joining the department, he taught at George Mason University and Elon University.  Dr. Martin earned his PhD in Educational Studies with a concentration in Cultural Studies from UNC-Greensboro in 2015; he also has an MSW from UNC-Chapel Hill and a BA in English and Education Studies from Guilford College.  His research interests include social justice education, critical animal studies, ethics in the “social” professions, visual pedagogy and queer studies.  A recent publication, for example, addressed the distribution of disturbing images from factory farms and questioned them as political, aesthetic and pedagogical tools.  Outside of VCU, you might find Troy planting his garden, baking a pie or tending to his beehive.
