Joseph Schaub joined the Focused Inquiry faculty in 2007, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2014. He teaches UNIV 111, 112, 200, and courses in the English Department: ENGL 380 (Southern Literature) and ENGL 206 (American Literature II). He serves or has served on the following committees: Policies and Procedures, Promotion, Curriculum, Textbook, FI/Advisor, and on several ad hoc hiring committees, chairing two. Prior to joining VCU, he served as Associate Professor of English at Newberry College, SC. His Ph.D., earned in 2001 at the University of South Carolina, concentrated on twentieth-century American literature and Southern literature. He has a keen interest in Scottish culture, and much of his current scholarship proceeds from that interest. Additionally, he enjoys Doctor Who as entertainment but also for scholarly work, having incorporated the program into Focused Inquiry classes and having recently published on the program. When not grading, preparing for class, working with students, writing, or reading, you can find him playing his fiddle, banjo, or guitar (nowhere nearing expertise, though), or vegetating in front of the television because he’s so exhausted from all the above.
